Let me provide a brief backdrop before I talk about the fashion show itself. It’s safe to say Milwaukee is not known as the fashion capital of the world (despite this bold claim in my Instagram bio). However, despite Milwaukee’s lackluster fashion scene, there are a host of enthusiasts uplifting the city of Milwaukee into a realm where Milwaukee and fashion can become somewhat synonymous. Obviously one person can’t change the entire landscape, but a handful of individuals who attended Milwaukee Fashion Week 2017 were able to showcase their style (all photos at bottom link to their respective Instagram account).
Milwaukee Fashion Week 2017
This brings me to the burning question I always hear, and the crux of this article. Milwaukee has a fashion week? Yes, the third annual Milwaukee Fashion Week showcased designers, models, hair and makeup artists and the like from the Midwest, all involved with the world of fashion. From designers like Emily Ristow, who whose brand Em.Ris encompasses edgy streetwear, to Sarah Lauren, who places inspiration from the world in her designs, Milwaukee’s talent pool is far from dry.
Obviously with a smaller population, Milwaukee’s exposure compared to a larger market like Chicago places us in the backseat. This step-child treatment does not mean that there are not unique and thriving individuals when we start to discuss fashion in Milwaukee.
Although a lot of the clothing showcased was specific to women, I can attest (from a man’s POV) that a handful of brands seemed pragmatic in their approach, yet offered a unique taste of style. While there were brands that opted for a simplistic appeal, other brands were outright WILD. Ieri Design featured a vest that was vibrant and full of varied patterns.
Additionally, Ieri Design also showcased a suit that only the boldest man could wear. This clothing line is not for the timid.
Milwaukee Fashion Week 2017 did not leave me scratching my head. Instead, it left me applauding the admirable work of designers, models and artists within the city. I am looking forward to next year already. Let me know what work you admired or thought was wack in the comments! Job well done, Milwaukee. As promised, check out some of the fashion-forward people at the show below. Peace, love and style.
