“Can I wear white after Labor Day?” I do not know how many times I’ve heard someone ask this question. Actually, I do – countless times. I’m sure you’ve heard this question thrown around, and around…and around. Why do we question if it is acceptable to rock white after Labor Day? It’s just another color. Oh, America and your traditions.
Obviously confused about why it’s widely assumed you should not wear white after labor day, I did some “thorough” research. From what I stumbled upon, the color white was primarily only worn by the rich during the summer and phased out of their wardrobes by the time fall hit. Of course the rule was determined by the wealthy. Ugh.
Another source, news.au, featured an article where Sylvia Lee (a NYC-based fashion desinger) stated it’s harder to pair dark-colored boots, leathers, etc. with the color white in seasons filled with snow and rain. Nobody wants rain or slush to splash on their white jeans. So from a functional perspective..I guess it makes sense. However, from a style perspective, wearing white after labor day is not a cardinal sin. Especially if there’s no rainfall or snowfall to worry about.
Recently, I rocked a pair of white jeans on a casual post-Labor Day Saturday. You can go ahead and gasp. Before I purchased these jeans from ASOS, I had not owned a pair of white jeans – unless my mom outfitted me in some white skinny jeans when I was younger. Doubt it though.
In my humble opinion, the color white is like the color black – it can be worn with any other color.
Whether you’re rocking a white crewneck, white jeans or a white [insert your item here] – do you.. It is easy to accept the status quo – especially when talking about cultivating your style.
And the verdict is..
Long story short..wear white whenever you please. There’s no rule book for fashion. If you want to wear all white in the middle of December, be my guest. If someone questions why you’re wearing white just send them to my blog! All my photos were taken by Ben Kustos – check out his work here. Peace, love and style.
